CAF Sanctions Against AS FAR and Mamelodi Sundowns for Champions League First Leg Revealed
A responsible source within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed in exclusive statements to "Al-Botola" website that CAF's Disciplinary Committee held an extraordinary meeting last night. The meeting was convened to review reports from referees and match commissioners following the incidents and clashes that occurred during the first leg of the Champions League final, held last Sunday in Pretoria between Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR.
Consequently, the Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Senegalese Ousmane Kane, decided to fine South African club Mamelodi Sundowns $35,000. This fine was imposed due to equipment used by security personnel, violations of safety standards, and the stadium announcer's use of loudspeakers during match events.
The committee also decided to fine AS FAR $100,000. This sanction was imposed due to what the Disciplinary Committee described as a recurrence of fan-related incidents during matches in the same competition.
The fines varied based on reports from the match commissioner and security coordinator, covering issues such as the lighting of flares, throwing of chairs, and crowd disturbances that disrupted security and organizational procedures in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium stands.
As of now, CAF's Disciplinary Committee has not yet issued any disciplinary decisions regarding the incidents that occurred in the second leg of the Confederation Cup semi-final last month, which featured Olympique Safi and Algeria's USM Alger.
