Barcelona Announces Fermín López Metatarsal Fracture, World Cup Absence
Barcelona has revealed the nature of midfielder Fermín López's injury, confirming he will undergo surgery after sustaining a severe injury during the recent La Liga match against Real Betis.
The Catalan club stated on its official website: "First-team player Fermín López suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot during the match against Real Betis. The player will undergo surgery."
The 23-year-old player left the field at halftime after experiencing sudden and severe pain in his right foot, despite no direct contact or strong challenge.
López is now expected to miss the 2026 World Cup with the Spain national team, less than a month before the finals are set to begin, given the lengthy recovery period required before he can return to action.
