France currently holds three direct Champions League spots, plus one place in the third qualifying round for the fourth-placed team. Under previous rules, the vacant spot would automatically go to the third-placed team in the fifth-ranked European league, which is Ligue 1. However, the new amendments tie the criterion to the individual club coefficient and its ability to be the highest-ranked domestically among its country's clubs that have not directly qualified.
Challenges arise for French clubs due to competitors with high UEFA coefficient rankings. For instance, Portuguese club Benfica boasts 90,000 points, a tally that surpasses potential French candidates like Lille (68,750 points) or Olympique Lyonnais (65,750 points).
