FIFA Extends Prestianni Ban to World Cup Over Vinicius Jr. Insults
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) confirmed today, Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the extension of the ban imposed on Benfica's Portuguese winger Gianluca Prestianni, making it a comprehensive international suspension. This decision complements a previous ruling by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which had suspended the player for six matches due to verbal abuses directed at Real Madrid's Spanish player Vinicius Jr. during a UEFA Champions League encounter between the two teams.
The sanction includes a six-match suspension, with three of those matches deferred for a probationary period. This will prevent Prestianni from participating in the Argentine national team's first two matches at the World Cup finals, should he be called up to the official squad. Under this ruling, the young winger will miss the matches against Algeria, scheduled for June 17, and Austria, which takes place five days later. It is noted that he has already served the first match of his continental suspension during the knockout playoff round of the European competition.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee clarified that it responded to UEFA's request to broaden the scope of the sanction to include all competitions outside the European continent. FIFA stated in its announcement, "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the six-match suspension imposed by UEFA on Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni to have global effect." This action followed the player's admission of using abusive language towards the Brazilian forward, despite European investigative bodies being unable to prove the existence of a racial insult, an accusation the player vehemently denied.
Information accompanying the incident indicated that Prestianni intentionally covered his mouth with his shirt while directing the abuse, in an attempt to conceal the words used. However, UEFA's investigations two weeks prior concluded that a prolonged suspension against the player was necessary. Amidst these developments, the Argentine winger faces the risk of missing the World Cup event, especially as FIFA's latest decision closes the door on his participation in the initial stages of his country's global campaign.
