Infantino: Players Covering Mouths While Speaking Should Be Sent Off
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called for players who cover their mouths while speaking to opponents to be punished with red cards. This comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni's alleged racist remarks towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior.
Prestianni reportedly covered his mouth with his shirt while addressing Vinicius, seemingly to prevent lip-reading and confirmation of his alleged racist comments, during the first leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff match for a spot in the round of 16.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the common practice of players covering their mouths, Infantino stated: “I think referees should assume that the player said something that should not be said, and that is why he covered his mouth.”
The FIFA President continued, asserting: “If a player covers their mouth and utters words with racist connotations, they must be sent off the field. If you have nothing to hide, don't cover your mouth, it's that simple.”
Infantino also suggested potentially reducing the minimum 10-match ban for players involved in racist incidents, provided they “apologize” to their victims, aiming to encourage a change in their behavior.
