UEFA Punishes Real Madrid Over Fan Racism
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has issued a decision to sanction Real Madrid, imposing a partial stadium closure on a suspended basis. This penalty will only be activated if the offense is repeated.
UEFA announced this sanction, in addition to an extra financial penalty on the Royal Club, due to the "racist behavior" of its fans during their match against Benfica in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff qualifying for the round of 16.
A statement released by UEFA read: "A fine of €15,000 has been imposed on Real Madrid CF, along with a partial stadium closure for the next UEFA club competition match hosted by Real Madrid, due to the racist behavior of its supporters."
UEFA clarified that this closure will not be applied for the upcoming match against Manchester City. Instead, it will be suspended for a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of this decision, and will only be activated if such behavior is repeated in its competitions.
