Officially: Prestianni Suspended for 6 Matches, 3 Deferred, Following Racism Incident Involving Vinicius
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has announced a severe sanction against Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni. This decision follows incidents that occurred during his team's match against Real Madrid in the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League.
The ruling comes after an investigation by an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector, which initiated disciplinary proceedings against the player for potential discriminatory behaviour towards Vinicius Junior, whom he allegedly called a "monkey." The committee subsequently confirmed his involvement in directing homophobic remarks.
The CEDB decided to suspend Prestianni for six official matches at club or national team level under UEFA jurisdiction. Three of these matches will be suspended for a probationary period of two years, effective from the date of the decision.
The body clarified that this sanction also includes the provisional suspension match already served by the player during the Champions League play-off return leg between Benfica and Real Madrid on February 25, 2026.
In the same context, the committee requested FIFA to extend the sanction globally, which could impact the player's participation in international competitions in the upcoming period.
