Raphinha Apologizes for Gestures Towards Atlético Madrid Fans After Barcelona's Champions League Exit
Barcelona's Brazilian winger Raphinha has issued a formal apology for a gesture directed towards Atlético Madrid fans following his team's exit from the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. The incident occurred at the Metropolitano Stadium, where the international player was absent from the match due to a hamstring injury.
Speaking on Wednesday, Raphinha clarified that his actions were a result of tension and a reaction to abuse directed at him by a fan. The Brazilian forward emphasized that this behavior does not represent his personal principles. Raphinha stated: "It was an act in a moment of tension and a reaction to a fan who was abusing me, and I apologize for my gesture, which does not reflect my values or my personality."
Regarding the officiating, the Brazilian forward also leveled sharp criticism after the match. He made a hand gesture suggesting his team had been "robbed" and told the media that Barcelona had been unfairly treated over both legs of the tie. This conduct at the Madrid stadium could potentially subject the player to sanctions from UEFA.
Meanwhile, Barcelona's elected president, Joan Laporta, described the refereeing decisions as "shameful and unacceptable," indicating the club's intention to file a formal complaint with the continental federation. This comes after Barcelona won the second leg 2-1, a result that was insufficient to prevent their elimination following a 2-0 home defeat in the first leg.
