Simeone: "There's Only One Way to Face Barcelona: Attack"
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone expressed immense pride in his team's qualification for the Champions League semi-finals, despite a tough match against Barcelona where they lost 2-1, having benefited from their 2-0 victory in the first leg.
Simeone stated that this qualification holds a special significance, noting that after 14 years of work, the team remains capable of competing among Europe's elite, despite changes in players and rebuilding the squad multiple times.
Following the match, Diego Simeone said, "Seeing the team still competing is exciting. The players have changed, we've started from scratch many times, and here we are back among the top four teams in Europe. We faced a team that plays exceptionally, possesses incredible speed, and is difficult to control."
Regarding his team's disastrous start, conceding two goals in the first 24 minutes, the Argentine coach replied, "Yes, but that's something that can happen. They are a very strong team. When you play against teams like that and make mistakes, they don't forgive you. It can happen: we thought they might score one or two goals. We had to play, attack, and impose our style. Sometimes you don't want to defend, but they force you to because you can't take the ball from them."
When asked about the secret behind eliminating Barcelona, Simeone responded, "In every match we play, we realize there's only one way to face them (Barcelona): and that is to attack. They had more possession this time; in the previous match, the situation was more balanced. If you don't attack them, you will lose. They are very skilled in attack. We were aware of the opportunities available to us."
