Raphinha Risks Suspension for Post-Atlético Madrid Remarks
Barcelona winger Raphinha's comments have sparked widespread controversy following the club's elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Atlético Madrid.
Despite missing the match due to injury, the Brazilian spoke to a Brazilian media outlet after the game, directing strong criticism at the refereeing, which he accused of "theft."
Raphinha stated: "It was a stolen match; the refereeing had many problems. The decisions made were incomprehensible. Atlético Madrid committed many fouls and did not receive a single yellow card. I want to understand why there is fear of Barcelona qualifying."
These statements could expose the player to disciplinary action from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), based on Article 11 of its Disciplinary Regulations concerning "General Principles of Conduct." This article prohibits any behavior that is offensive or brings football or the association into disrepute, as confirmed by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
UEFA regulations stipulate that such statements could lead to disciplinary sanctions, potentially including a three-match suspension in the Champions League, to be served during the upcoming season.
This situation comes with a similar precedent: former Barcelona player Neymar received a three-match suspension after criticizing refereeing on social media following Paris Saint-Germain's match against Manchester United in 2019. That ban was later reduced to two matches by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
