Enrique After Reaching Champions League Semi-Final: "We Decided the Liverpool Match with Counter-Attacks and Deserved to Qualify"
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique expressed his pride after his team secured a spot in the Champions League semi-finals, following their 2-0 victory over Liverpool.
Following the match, Enrique affirmed that the encounter was not easy, noting he had anticipated a tough game, especially considering last season's events. He stated, "It was clear that we would play a complicated match, but I am very proud of what the team delivered."
The Spanish coach explained that his team delivered an excellent first half, successfully imposing their style in the opponent's half. He added, "In the first half, we controlled the game and played in the opponent's half, which is very difficult in this stadium and amidst this atmosphere."
Enrique pointed out that the second half saw greater struggles, which was expected, but he praised his players' discipline and their ability to manage the game's flow. "In the second half, we suffered as we expected, but we did what we had to do when we didn't have the ball," he remarked.
He also highlighted that Liverpool's attacking impetus created opportunities for counter-attacks, which the Parisian team successfully exploited. "They took a lot of risks, and we knew we would get chances on the counter-attack, and we managed to score two goals," he said.
Enrique considered the qualification well-deserved, given the events of both the first and second legs. He stated, "I believe we deserved to qualify based on both matches."
Regarding his team's performance in such difficult circumstances, the Spanish coach explained that the players demonstrated great tactical maturity. "I didn't learn new things, but the players showed their ability to understand the demands of each match, and today we played the way we should have played," he commented.
He continued, "We started the match well, but in the second half, we faced great difficulties because they pressed us high, yet we managed to score two goals from counter-attacks."
Enrique concluded his remarks by praising his team's performance, emphasizing that what the players delivered reflects the ambition of a team aiming to go far in the European competition. "We can talk about a fantastic match from a team that wants to go far in this tournament," he affirmed.
