Bayern Munich Cautions Against Real Madrid Comeback Despite First-Leg Advantage
Representatives from German club Bayern Munich discussed the prospects of their eagerly anticipated UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Spanish giants Real Madrid. Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, and sporting director Max Eberl all emphasized the magnitude of the challenge awaiting the team this coming Wednesday.
Despite the Bavarian club's 2-1 advantage from the first leg, played at the Santiago Bernabéu, team officials stressed that the qualification spot is far from decided against an opponent with extensive experience in the continental competition.
Sporting director Max Eberl explained that the team is experiencing a state of cautious optimism following the first-leg result. He stated: "What we experienced was a controlled euphoria, and we must capitalize on this spirit because no one can take what we achieved away from us. Nevertheless, we are fully aware of the magnitude of the great opponent awaiting us. Yes, we are in a good position at the start of the match, but we know we haven't qualified yet."
In the same vein, midfielder Leon Goretzka stressed the importance of being attentive to Real Madrid's attacking prowess and their high ability to create danger suddenly.
Goretzka affirmed that the team does not require additional warnings regarding the opponent's strength, stating: "We know very well who we are playing against and the nature of the match awaiting us. In the first leg, it was clear how quickly they can create scoring opportunities, so we don't need anyone to remind us of that; we are aware of it ourselves."
For his part, Joshua Kimmich noted that Real Madrid's performance in domestic competitions does not necessarily reflect what the team delivers in the European tournament. He said: "It doesn't matter what form they are in; when the Champions League comes around, they perform at a high level. That's why I believe their previous results don't make a difference in these encounters."
These statements come as Bayern Munich prepares to maintain the 2-1 goal advantage they secured in the Spanish capital, Madrid. The German team seeks to confirm their superiority and ensure progression to the semi-finals, while Real Madrid aims to overturn their deficit and overcome the quarter-final hurdle.
