Real Madrid Rejects La Liga Retro Round Participation Amid Strained Relationship with League
Real Madrid has decided not to participate in the La Liga Retro Round initiative, organized by the Spanish Football League and scheduled to take place between April 10 and 13, 2026. This decision stems from institutional and political reasons related to the strained relationship between the club and the league's board of directors, as the Madrid team refuses to engage in promotional campaigns aimed at celebrating the history and legacy of the clubs.
Adhering to its previous stances, the Royal Club refrained from designing any commemorative kit specifically for this initiative. The club affirmed its continued policy of not engaging in joint commercial or marketing activities overseen by the Spanish League, a position that reflects a clear divergence in visions between the two parties, preventing the team from being among the participants in this event, which is the first of its kind among major European leagues.
The Retro Round aims to pay tribute to the heritage of clubs by wearing classic kits specially designed for the occasion. Most of the 42 clubs from Spain's first and second divisions have joined the initiative. Despite the momentum the initiative enjoys, Real Madrid's absence represents a notable exception at a time when various other teams are seeking to strengthen their connection with their fans by evoking past memories.
On another note, field data indicates that other clubs, such as Rayo Vallecano and Getafe, will also not participate in this round due to what have been described as operational and technical reasons. However, attention remains focused on Real Madrid due to the club's institutional weight. This stance represents a new chapter in the ongoing tug-of-war between the club's management and the league, further reinforcing the division in marketing and promotional decisions for the Spanish championship.
