Armando Gonzalez Leads Young Global Goalscorers, Outperforming Lamine Yamal
Armando "Hormiga" Gonzalez, the Mexican forward for Chivas de Guadalajara, has topped the list of the world's most prolific goalscorers under the age of 23, surpassing Spanish star Lamine Yamal of Barcelona.
The 22-year-old Gonzalez achieved this feat by scoring 25 goals across the Apertura 2025 and Clausura 2026 tournaments in the Mexican league. This puts him four goals ahead of Yamal, who netted 21 goals during the same period.
The young striker solidified his global lead after scoring a brace against Pumas, which also placed him at the top of the Clausura 2026 local scoring charts. Statistics highlight Gonzalez's exceptional scoring efficiency in 2026, with 13 goals in 18 matches, compared to Yamal's 12 goals in 24 appearances, underscoring the Mexican forward's superior goal-per-game ratio.
His developing form earned him a call-up to the Mexican national team by coach Javier Aguirre, where Gonzalez has also found the back of the net internationally. Amidst this impressive rise, Chivas de Guadalajara has set a release clause of approximately 15 million euros for European clubs interested in the player. The list of top young goalscorers also features Argentine Joaquin Panichelli of Racing Strasbourg with 20 goals and Swiss Alessandro Vogt of St. Gallen with 16 goals.
Gonzalez offered a humorous insight into his personal life, stating, "I never like spicy food, I'm a fake Mexican," a remark that reflects his simple personality away from the pressures of competition. This stellar performance confirms the rising star's position as one of the most prominent talents in the Americas, ahead of promising European names such as Mika Godts of Dutch club Ajax, who has scored 14 goals.
