New Paris Mayor Declares Support for Sale of Parc des Princes to PSG
Emmanuel Grégoire, the newly elected Mayor of Paris, has expressed his personal support for the sale of the Parc des Princes stadium. His remarks came during a meeting on Thursday with a delegation from the Paris Saint-Germain fan association. These statements pave the way for reopening dialogue with the French club's management regarding the acquisition of the stadium, reflecting the new administration's desire to resolve this long-standing issue between the city council and the club's management.
Grégoire's vision starkly contrasts with that of his predecessor, Anne Hidalgo, who had definitively rejected the idea of a sale. The current mayor aims to reach a final agreement before next summer. Grégoire affirmed his desire for the club to remain in the French capital, stating, "We have a tremendous emotional attachment to our club and we want it to stay in Paris. We also seek to create the conditions that ensure its continuation here, and for this reason, I mentioned that I personally support the sale." This opens a new chapter in the relationship between the city council and the club.
Clarifying the financial dimensions of this stance, the Mayor indicated that the general budget should not bear the burden of major sports investments, considering that "it is not for public money to cover the costs of a facility dedicated to professional football." The coming period is expected to witness greater rapprochement between the two sides, especially with Grégoire anticipated to attend the Paris Saint-Germain versus Toulouse match on Friday evening alongside club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, a step that fulfills his previous promises to the team's fans during his election campaign to discuss the future of their historic home.
