French League to Test Referee Audio Broadcast for First Time in PSG vs. Toulouse Match
The French Professional Football League (LFP) is set to conduct its first live test of referee audio broadcasting during the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse. This game, marking the opening of the 28th round, will take place at the Parc des Princes.
Referee Eric Wattellier will provide verbal explanations for certain decisions, particularly those involving Video Assistant Referee (VAR) interventions. The aim is to allow fans in the stands and viewers at home to hear the direct justifications behind the calls.
According to reports from Radio France, refereeing circles have described this initiative as an "educational step" designed to enhance public understanding of how matches are officiated.
Anthony Gautier, the National Technical Director for Refereeing at the French Football Federation, emphasized the importance of clear communication. He stated, "I have always believed that everyone accepts things better when they understand them." He added that this experiment prioritizes transparency in refereeing development and aims to bridge the gap between officials and supporters.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) had previously given French sports authorities the green light to begin partial tests of this technology starting in early 2024.
This move comes in response to previous requests from French League officials, including Nicolas de Tavernost, the former General Director of the media sector for the league. Sporting circles are eagerly awaiting the results of this test during the match, which kicks off at 8:45 PM.
