FIFA Addresses Rumors of Italy Replacing Iran for 2026 World Cup
Media reports have indicated a surge in speculation among fans regarding the possibility of the Italian national team returning to participate in the 2026 World Cup finals, should Iran withdraw from the tournament. This debate arises after the Azzurri's elimination from the qualifying rounds for the World Cup, which Canada, Mexico, and the United States will co-host between June 11 and July 19, 2026. However, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and its president, Gianni Infantino, do not anticipate any Iranian withdrawal at present and affirm the Asian team's presence in the global event.
The Italian national team was eliminated from the European play-offs after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final match via a penalty shootout (4-1) following a 1-1 draw, which sparked hopes among some fans for an alternative scenario that would grant Italy an additional spot.
These hopes are based on the premise of Iran's exclusion or withdrawal. However, the tournament's regulations grant the international body broad authority in determining the identity of any replacement team, in accordance with the rules governing international competitions.
FIFA clarified its position in the 2026 World Cup regulations, specifically in Article 6, Paragraph 7, stating: "If any participating member association withdraws or is expelled from the competition, FIFA shall decide on the matter at its sole discretion, take such measures as it deems necessary, and may replace the member association concerned with another association."
This article reflects the international organization's full discretionary power in handling sudden withdrawals, without obliging it to specific classification criteria that would guarantee the return of major teams.
FIFA's policy in such cases tends to preserve continental quotas to ensure geographical balance, making the replacement of an Asian team with a European one highly unlikely under current sporting conventions.
