CAF President Patrice Motsepe admitted that he was initially supposed to leave his position after his first term ended in March 2025, but he decided to continue to pursue "reforms" and ensure his successor would follow the same approach.

Motsepe was re-elected unopposed as CAF President for a second term extending until 2029 during the 14th General Assembly held in Cairo in March 2025.

The South African stated during a press conference held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo: "I was essentially supposed to lead the Confederation of African Football for only one term."
