Mendy Slams CAF: Will He Face Investigation and Punishment Like Teammate Krepin Diatta?
Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's recent statements have sparked widespread controversy following his public criticism of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), potentially opening the door to disciplinary sanctions under the continental body's regulations.
Mendy's remarks came as part of his criticism of CAF's performance, where he asserted that the institution is not keeping pace with the development of African football. His tone has been described as "harsh" and "unprecedented" for an international player.
Among the most prominent statements that could subject Mendy to sanctions, he said: "Unfortunately, I am not surprised by these decisions, which came from an organization like CAF, which unfortunately is not progressing at the same speed as football."
He continued: "Unfortunately, a handful of people are deciding the fate of our sport on this continent, and they are simply unqualified for this task for many reasons. The Africa Cup of Nations was the last straw. It is clear that this body will have to re-evaluate itself and undergo a comprehensive reform in the coming weeks or months. We are led by a dysfunctional body."
These statements, although free of profanity, contain direct criticism of CAF and its officials, and could be classified as "damaging the institution's reputation" or "questioning the competence of officials."
These comments recall the incident involving his Senegal national team colleague, Krepin Diatta, who did not escape punishment after a strong media outburst following their elimination by Ivory Coast in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
At the time, Diatta directly attacked CAF, stating: "You are corrupt. You have killed us, you are corrupt! Keep your Africa Cup of Nations. You go to VAR to give them a penalty, then Ismaïla Sarr enters the box, and you don't want to review VAR? I'm really sorry, but they destroyed our competition." These statements cost him a four-match suspension (two of which were suspended) and a fine of 10,000 euros.
Referring to CAF's regulations, the body enforces clauses such as "damaging the reputation of competitions" or "statements that harm the image of African football." These provisions are often used to penalize sharp media outbursts, even when made in the context of expressing anger or protest.
Given this, Mendy's statements raise a question: Will CAF proceed with disciplinary action against him?
