Mendy: 'Morocco Hasn't Won the Cup in 50 Years, But We Responded in Our Own Way'
Senegal national team goalkeeper Edouard Mendy affirmed that the Teranga Lions' Africa Cup of Nations title was the fruit of collective effort and a high fighting spirit, emphasizing that ultimately, football was the biggest winner.
The goalkeeper told beIN Sports: "We won't speak emotionally at this moment. Some things happened, but in the end, what we must remember is that football triumphed. Morocco had been waiting for this title for over 50 years, and all circumstances were in their favor, but we responded in our own way, and today Senegal will celebrate."
He added: "Regarding the penalty kick? (Diaz) tried to execute it in a 'Panenka' style, and I stayed firm in my place. I helped my team in that moment to stay in the game. Our goal was to win this final and bring the cup home. Millions of Senegalese are happy today, and we will enjoy this moment."
He concluded: "Yes, (Diaz) wanted to score, and I saved it; the debate should stop here. What happened when we entered the locker room? That remains between us; we did it together and came back together, and that is what's most important. We can be proud of ourselves tonight."
It is worth noting that the Senegal national team defeated Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, securing the continental title for the second time in its history.
