UEFA Fines French Club Lille Over Aston Villa Match Incidents
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on French club Lille, including total fines amounting to €82,750, following incidents at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. This decision, confirmed by the continental federation on Friday, March 27, 2026, came after a series of violations were observed during the team's UEFA Europa League match against English side Aston Villa, which took place on March 12.
The disciplinary committee's report cited five specific violations caused by fans and organizers. These included the blocking of public passageways, the throwing of objects, and the lighting of fireworks within the stands. The charges also encompassed the broadcasting of an inappropriate message via audiovisual means in the stadium, as well as causing a delay to the match's kick-off, which UEFA deemed a breach of applicable regulatory rules.
In terms of sporting results, the French club exited the continental competition in the quarter-finals after losing to Aston Villa with an aggregate score of 3-0 across both legs. They suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg before losing 2-0 in the return fixture. Currently, the team is striving to improve its position in the French Ligue 1, where they sit in fifth place with the same number of points as fourth-placed Lyon in the standings.
