Kompany Announces Urbig's Imminent Return to Bayern Munich Goal Against Atalanta
Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich's coach, has announced the imminent return of reserve goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to the starting lineup for the upcoming Champions League match against Atalanta. Urbig rejoined team training on Tuesday after recovering from a concussion. This development significantly reduces the likelihood of 16-year-old youth goalkeeper Leonard Prescott starting, who was a potential option given the absence of first-choice Manuel Neuer and third-choice Sven Ulreich due to injury.
Kompany clarified that Urbig's participation is closely tied to a final medical evaluation before the match. The Bayern Munich coach stated: “If things go tomorrow morning as they are now, Urbig will be in goal naturally, and if not, we will look for another solution and implement it.” These developments come at a time when the German club's management is facing a severe goalkeeping crisis, following Ulreich's adductor muscle tear and Neuer's ongoing struggle with a recurring calf injury, which had prompted the coaching staff to consider promoting youth players.
Meanwhile, the Bavarian team is striving to overcome the numerical deficit affecting prominent players such as Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala, while also aiming to maintain their European advantage after a dominant 6-1 victory in the first leg. Urbig sustained his injury during the previous encounter with Atalanta, placing the club in a critical situation that necessitated considering Prescott, who typically plays for the youth team, before recent training sessions showed signs of a breakthrough with the young goalkeeper's return to collective training.
