AFC Confirms Iran's Participation in World Cup Finals, Settling Debate
AFC General Secretary Windsor John confirmed on Monday that the Iranian national team remains on the list of participants for the upcoming World Cup finals, scheduled to be held next June in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. John clarified that the continental body has not received any information indicating Tehran's withdrawal from the global tournament, noting that the Iranian Football Federation officially informed its Asian counterpart of its intention to commit to participating in this international sporting event.
These assurances come to dispel recent doubts that arose due to regional tensions and statements made by US President Donald Trump and Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Daniamali. In this context, Windsor John stated, "The Iranian Federation has informed us of their going to the World Cup," further explaining the continental federation's desire for their presence by adding, "They are members of our federation and we want them to play, and as far as we know, Iran will participate in the tournament."
The Iranian national team, ranked 20th globally by FIFA, is scheduled to play its three group stage matches on American soil. This appearance marks their fourth consecutive qualification for the World Cup finals. Last week, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Daniamali had stated on state television that current circumstances made it difficult to compete in the tournament. However, the official social media accounts of the Iranian national team emphasized that no one could exclude the team from the anticipated global participation.
