Flick: 'Playing Here Was Not Easy, Barcelona Will Be Different in Second Leg'
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed satisfaction with his team's 1-1 away draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. He highlighted the difficulty of the match and the challenging playing conditions at the opponent's stadium.
Regarding the result, Flick stated: "Yes, I am happy with the outcome. We didn't play well when we had possession, but we defended as a team. It was not easy to play in this stadium with these fans; they put a lot of pressure on us. It wasn't simple to keep the ball, but you cannot make all these mistakes. We lost possession too many times. They have fast players, but I am satisfied with the team's defensive effort."
Addressing the impact of fatigue and injuries, the coach added: "We have played many matches recently, and some players, like Bernal and Pedri, have returned from injuries. We certainly need to improve, but the positive thing is the result. After being 1-0 down, it was great to come back and secure the draw."
Regarding the return leg, Flick commented: "We will see a different Barcelona in the second leg. Now we need to rest, and we will have enough time to prepare well for the upcoming matches. When playing at this level, whether in the Champions League or La Liga, it's natural to face such moments. We must adapt to this standard."
Barcelona is set to host Newcastle in the return leg on Wednesday, March 18, at 20:00 GMT, at the Camp Nou stadium.
