Gasperini Confirms Ferguson's Season Over, Remains Optimistic About Champions League Hopes
Gian Piero Gasperini, the team's coach, has revealed the significant challenges facing his club's pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot, attributing them to a worsening injury crisis. Gasperini indicated that the current ambition is to remain competitive for as long as possible, stating: "The goal is to stay in the competition for as long as possible."
The head coach officially announced the end of player Ferguson's season following a medical setback that requires surgical intervention, just as he was nearing a return to action. Gasperini clarified the team's health situation, stating: "The injury to Dybala, as well as Ferguson, who was supposed to recover after a few matches and showed excellent levels last December, but this setback now forces him to undergo surgery, and thus his season has ended."
The coach described a group of players, including Dybala, Angelino, Bailly, and Dovbyk, as "critical cases" that raise concerns about their physical readiness and limit options for upcoming matches. While Dovbyk is expected to return by the end of April and Malen's readiness for the next match has been confirmed, Angelino continues his rehabilitation program amid signs of improvement, though no definite return date has been set.
These developments come as the team prepares for important Serie A matches against Genoa and Bologna, in addition to their continental commitments in the Europa League. Gasperini stressed the necessity of focusing on delivering strong performances rather than getting caught up in early calculations, noting that the recent draw against Juventus did not negatively impact player morale.
