From Teaching to Leading the Moroccan National Team: The Journey of the Atlas Lions' New Coach
Mohamed Wahbi, the former coach of the Moroccan U20 national team, has emerged as one of the most prominent figures in the national football scene following a historic achievement. He led the "Atlas Cubs" to victory in the U20 World Cup, defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final in Chile. This triumph made Morocco the first Arab nation and only the second African team to achieve this global feat.
Despite his coaching success, Wahbi did not have a professional playing career. He began his professional life as a teacher in Belgium before deciding to venture into coaching. Wahbi joined the youth ranks of Belgian club Anderlecht, where he spent over 17 years, guiding all age categories from U9 to U21.
During his time at Anderlecht, he contributed to the development of prominent players such as Youri Tielemans, Adnan Januzaj, and Charly Musonda. He also led the youth team to the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League in 2015, overcoming major clubs like Barcelona and Porto, which honed his high-level technical expertise and robust leadership style.
Following a brief experience in Saudi Arabia as an assistant to coach Yannick Ferrera at Al-Fateh club, Wahbi returned to Morocco, where he was appointed coach of the U20 national team in March 2022. Despite facing criticism after failing to qualify for the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, Wahbi retained his position. He then led the team to their global triumph in Chile, surpassing strong teams like Spain, Brazil, South Korea, and France before defeating Argentina in the final.
Today, with his official appointment as head coach of the senior Moroccan national team, Wahbi shoulders the responsibility of leveraging all his experience to build a competitive squad for upcoming challenges. He will rely on his precise analytical approach, his ability to develop players, and his nationalistic spirit, which has always driven him to prioritize Morocco's interests above all else.
