UEFA to Decide Finalissima Venue by End of Next Week, No Alternative to Doha Considered Yet
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has stated that it will not make any decision regarding the venue for the match between the champions of Europe and South America, known as the "Finalissima," until the end of next week.
The match, featuring European champions Spain and Copa América holders Argentina, was originally scheduled to take place on March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
However, the prospect of the match being held in Qatar has become increasingly unlikely following the Qatar Football Association's announcement of an indefinite suspension of all its competitions in the wake of US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which responded by launching missiles at some neighboring Arab countries, including Qatar.
In a statement quoted by Reuters, UEFA said: "Discussions are still ongoing with the local organizers, who have made great efforts to ensure the success of the match. A final decision on the match is expected by the end of next week. At this stage, there is no consideration of any alternative venue."
The Spanish Football Federation is pressing for clarification, understanding the importance of this month's international break for preparations ahead of the World Cup in North America next June and July, especially with only three weeks remaining until the scheduled match date.
Sources told Reuters last Tuesday that London is considered the frontrunner to host the match, although Spanish media have also mentioned Rome and Milan as potential options.
Wembley Stadium in London previously hosted the last edition of the tournament in 2022, when Argentina claimed the title against Italy.
However, Wembley Stadium is already scheduled to host a match between England and Uruguay on March 27, the same date allocated for the Spain vs. Argentina encounter.
