Officially: Ter Stegen Moves to Girona on Loan from Barcelona
Spanish club Girona has officially announced the signing of 33-year-old German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The goalkeeper's move aims to secure more playing time, as he seeks to guarantee his place in Germany's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
For its part, Girona hopes to strengthen its goalkeeping position through this transfer to ensure its stay in the Spanish top flight. Barcelona will cover the majority of the player's salary.
Girona stated in a press release: "Girona Football Club and Barcelona Football Club have reached an agreement regarding the loan of Marc-André ter Stegen, who will guard the red and white goal until the end of the season."
Ter Stegen's decision to depart comes after his opportunities at Barcelona diminished this season, having played only 90 minutes in the Copa del Rey.
The German goalkeeper had lost his starting spot in the team to both Joan García and Wojciech Szczęsny. Ter Stegen has played 423 matches for Barcelona since joining the club in 2014.
In a statement, Ter Stegen expressed his mixed feelings about the moment, saying: "Today is my last day of the season with my teammates and staff at Barcelona, and I feel mixed emotions. So many memories and feelings are passing through me. For almost 12 years, this club, and specifically this changing room, has been my home."
He also expressed his deep gratitude and pride for his time at the club, affirming his love for the club, the city, and the region. He thanked his teammates, staff, and fans, and expressed pride in wearing the captain's armband before embarking on his new adventure in Catalonia.
