Alonso After 1-1 Draw with Girona: "The Season is Long and We Are Still in the Race"
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso affirmed that the season is still long for competing for the Spanish league title, noting that it is normal for a team to go through different phases.
Speaking at the press conference following the 1-1 draw with Girona, Alonso stated: "In the second half specifically, there was an improvement; we pressed more and created chances. We had enough opportunities to win, but we lacked precision in finishing attacks. We are still in the competition, everything is very tight, and the journey is still long, so we must continue to work."
Regarding a potential penalty not awarded to his team against Girona, Alonso explained: "I didn't see it, but I was told it was reviewable by VAR due to contact. These are crucial moments that can change the course of a match."
He continued: "Throughout the season, you go through different phases. Initially, we were more consistent. In recent matches, varying periods emerge. In the second half, we were much better than in the first. We managed to come back. The team showed a desire to compensate after falling behind 1-0, but what we lacked was decisiveness. We had three or four clear chances inside the box to score the second goal and win, and the season is still long."
Regarding Real Madrid's three consecutive draws, Alonso said: "We must maintain the same unity we possess, with a sufficient amount of self-criticism, which is essential. We have a desire to win away from home, which we have faced a lot in this schedule. On Wednesday, we have an opportunity in Bilbao."
