Regragui: "Africa Cup of Nations Now as Strong as European Championship"
Walid Regragui, head coach of the Moroccan national team, believes that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has grown in strength to rival the UEFA European Championship. His comments came after Morocco's victory over Comoros in the first round of the group stage.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Regragui stated: "Football is currently changing, and we must adapt to these changes, to these players, and to this new mentality. I believe Africa is also progressing, and I see that this tournament has become strong, rivalling the European Championship, because there are now real teams and real stadiums."
He continued: "Africa will grow even more, and we will see that in the upcoming World Cup. Over the next 15 to 20 years, this tournament will be a competition everyone follows and will indeed become very competitive, because there are very high-level young players emerging."
Regragui concluded: "Consequently, this tournament, which takes place every four years, will be a real event that no one will want to miss. There are interests everywhere, but my interest is to see African football grow and advance."
