Egypt vs. Iran Match Sparks Controversy After Being Designated 'Pride' Game at World Cup Between Nations That Criminalize Homosexuality

The Organizing Committee for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has designated the match between Egypt and Iran, scheduled for June 26 at Lumen Field in Seattle as part of the third round of the group stage, as a "Pride" match to support the LGBTQ+ community.

This decision is highly controversial given that both nations involved criminalize homosexuality. In Iran, it is punishable by death, while in Egypt, public morality laws are frequently used to suppress the rights and relationships of LGBTQ+ individuals. This situation is expected to open the door for extensive political and social interactions, particularly due to the cultural disparities between the host nations and the participating countries.

The Organizing Committee affirmed that there are no plans to reschedule the match, noting that the "Pride" game was planned long ago to celebrate Pride events in Seattle and across the country.

A spokesperson for the organization told "Outsports" that, "This expression, led by the host city, reflects Seattle and Washington State's commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone finds a place, whether they are players, fans, residents, or visitors."

He added, "Football possesses a unique power to unite people across borders, cultures, and beliefs, and we are honored to host the Pride match and celebrate Pride within the global football community."
