Portugal Coach: "Long Suspension for Ronaldo Would Be a Great Injustice!"
Roberto Martinez believes that the red card Cristiano Ronaldo received against Ireland on Thursday, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, was undeserved.
"The Don" was sent off in the 61st minute, with his team trailing 2-0, after striking an opposing player off the ball. This incident could lead to a three-match suspension, according to media reports. If this penalty is imposed, the 40-year-old would miss Portugal's first two World Cup matches should they qualify.
Speaking on Saturday at the press conference ahead of the match against Armenia, Martinez stated: "Cristiano's reaction was the result of continuous provocation, which started in the pre-match press conference and continued before the game began. He did not commit a violent act and does not deserve a red card. We need to prepare well for this issue, as imposing a long suspension would be a great injustice."
It is worth noting that the Portuguese national team will host Armenia tomorrow, Sunday, at 15:00 GMT+1, in the final round of qualifiers. A victory would secure qualification for Ronaldo's teammates to the 2026 World Cup.
