Regragui: Arab Cup Before AFCON 'Illogical,' National Team Remains Top Priority

Morocco national team coach Walid Regragui affirmed that the primary objective for the national team is to prepare optimally for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite the team's participation in the upcoming Arab Cup.

Speaking at a press conference held today, Friday, Regragui stated, "Communication is ongoing, especially with Fathi Jamal, to prepare the best possible team for the Arab Cup. However, as I said, our priority is the Africa Cup of Nations. It's possible to win the Arab Cup, but if we don't win the AFCON, no one will be happy."

Regragui noted that, from his perspective, the timing of the Arab Cup before the AFCON is illogical. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the national team would participate with the strongest available squads. He added, "With Tarik Sektioui or Fathi Jamal, we will strive to select players carefully. What I confirm is that the priority will always be for the senior national team. We have a large pool of players who have excelled in the professional league and won the CHAN title, and we will utilize them in the Arab Cup."

The national coach also highlighted challenges related to injuries and player management. He explained, "The main problem I face as the coach of the senior national team is the fear that a player might go to the Arab Cup and suffer an injury, especially when you might need him for the Africa Cup of Nations."

He concluded, "The priority is always for the senior national team. I cannot risk the senior national team players, especially since the Arab Cup final will be on December 18, just three days before our first match in the AFCON."
