FIFA Announces New Midfield Gathering Protocol for National Anthems at World Cup
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has announced a new pre-match protocol system for the 2026 World Cup, a move aimed at enhancing the fan experience inside stadiums through what it described as an "interactive fan presentation ceremony."
This change is part of FIFA's vision to develop pre-kickoff moments, with the redesign of how players are presented and national anthems are performed on the pitch.
According to the official statement, the most prominent modification involves all players from both teams, including starters and substitutes, gathering at midfield during the national anthem. This collective display is intended to reflect a spirit of belonging and give all players the opportunity to participate in this symbolic moment.
The governing body explained that the goal of this new protocol is to make the pre-match moment more interactive for fans. This will be achieved through the introduction of new visual elements within stadiums, increased use of national flags, and organizing player entrances through special gates that offer a comprehensive visual spectacle.
This new system is expected to be implemented during the opening match of the 2026 World Cup and will be gradually rolled out across the remaining matches of the tournament.
