La Liga Proposes Mid-August Start for 2026-2027 Season
La Liga's Player Affairs Office, led by Roberto Jimenez, has put forward a proposal for the 2026-2027 season calendar, aiming for the league to commence on the weekend of August 14-16, 2026. This initiative comes in response to the challenges posed by the extended duration of the upcoming World Cup and its direct impact on the scheduling of domestic matches and the international commitments of clubs and players.
The proposal includes an option for clubs whose players are significantly affected by World Cup participation to play their opening matches in the middle of the week following the official start date, ensuring sporting balance and fairness. Roberto Jimenez described this plan as a "protective and viable proposal," emphasizing that it fully respects the collective agreement by adhering to a 21-day holiday period and 20 days of pre-season preparations for each club, in line with professional competition standards.
In an effort to reach consensus with relevant parties, Jimenez revealed that three meetings have been held with the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) to discuss the calendar details and clarify its constraints. Jimenez stated, "We have already held three meetings with the players' association in search of a consensus, and La Liga's proposal fully complies with the collective bargaining agreement by respecting the scheduled holidays and preparations, the planning of which is the responsibility of each club." He also highlighted the impact of the global tournament, adding, "With the special condition that the World Cup will last ten days longer than previous editions, things become a little more complicated."
Technical analyses indicate that only four Spanish clubs might be directly affected by their players reaching advanced stages of the World Cup. This necessitates integrating the calendar with European competitions, FIFA windows, and Copa del Rey matches. Since taking charge of the Player Affairs Office in December 2025, Jimenez has been working to strengthen relationships with player representatives and promote initiatives that ensure their professional development and the stability of domestic competition schedules.
