Basque Government Seeks Deliberation Period on 2030 World Cup Hosting Amid Economic Concerns
The Spanish Basque regional government has officially requested a period of reflection and analysis regarding the participation of Bilbao and San Sebastian as host cities for the 2030 FIFA World Cup matches.
This move comes amid growing doubts concerning the economic and logistical implications of organizing the event, as well as the requirements set by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
This period is expected to last several months, allowing for an in-depth study of the situation before FIFA's final decision, which is not anticipated before January 2027.
Maria Ubarretxena, spokesperson for the Basque Government, explained that a decision of such magnitude and weight cannot be rushed. She stated, "A decision of this importance cannot be settled with a simple yes or no," emphasizing the necessity of this analytical timeframe, which regional authorities consider a crucial step at present.
Ubarretxena also pointed out that the final word rests with FIFA, affirming her desire to send a reassuring message to the public. She said, "The final word will be FIFA's, and this decision will not be issued before January 2027. We still have seven months, and we want to convey calm to everyone," referring to ongoing consultations aimed at protecting the interests of both cities.
In this context, official reservations have emerged from Elixabete Etxanobe, Deputy General of Biscay, and Jon Insausti, Mayor of San Sebastian, regarding their cities' readiness to bear the burdens of hosting and comply with the required standards.
Despite the initial support provided by the Basque Government for the bid file and previously proposed stadiums, there is now an urgent need to accurately assess the financial and organizational feasibility to ensure that local interests are not adversely affected by the strict international requirements imposed by hosting a global event of this scale.
Regarding the motivations, officials confirmed that the current hesitation is not linked to the possibility of the Spanish national team playing its matches in the region, but rather focuses on the proper management of resources and logistical commitments.
Through this review, the Basque Country aims to balance the passion for sports hosting with financial responsibility, avoiding hasty final positions that could lead to uncalculated burdens in the distant future.
