FIFA Approves Rules for Replacing Injured Players in 2026 World Cup Final Squads
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has approved new regulations for replacing players in the final squads for the 2026 World Cup finals, specifically in cases of serious injury or sudden illness. This decision comes as national teams begin to unveil their 26-player rosters for the global tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Under the newly announced guidelines, teams are permitted to replace any outfield player with another from their provisional squad, provided the change is made a maximum of 24 hours before the team's first match in the tournament. FIFA clarified this procedure, stating: "A player registered in the final squad can only be replaced by another from the provisional squad in case of serious injury or illness, and this must be done no later than 24 hours before their team's first match in the World Cup." However, the regulations offer greater flexibility for the goalkeeper position, allowing an injured goalkeeper to be replaced at any point during the competition.
In a related development, FIFA has set June 1 as the final deadline for all participating nations to announce their official squads. FIFA will then publish the complete lists for all 48 teams on June 2. While more than ten teams have already revealed their rosters, administrative preparations are ongoing to ensure all elements are ready before the anticipated kick-off of the world's biggest football event.
