Morocco Faces Joint Southern African Bid for AFCON 2028 Hosting Rights
The bids for hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have entered the decisive stage, following the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) announcement that it has received several official bids to host the next edition of the continental showpiece.
According to circulating reports, a joint bid led by South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, under the umbrella of the COSAFA (Council of Southern Africa Football Associations) union, stands out among the prominent candidates. This bid proposes distributing the tournament matches among the four countries, with South Africa being allocated the largest share of games.
Meanwhile, Morocco's bid also features prominently among the strong contenders to host the 2028 edition, alongside Ethiopia, which has officially announced its entry into the hosting race.
The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football is expected to decide on the identity of the host country during an upcoming meeting, following a thorough review of the submitted bids and an evaluation of their organizational readiness.
