Rajoub Explains Refusal to Shake Hands with Israeli Official: "How Can I Shake Hands or Take a Picture with Such a Person?"
Jibril Rajoub, President of the Palestinian Football Association, has justified his refusal to shake hands with an official from the Israeli Football Association, stating that there is no common ground between them.
Speaking to the press after the incident, Rajoub said: "I believe that Infantino, with good intentions, was trying to take a joint picture or shake hands, but my analysis and understanding is that the Israeli representative is not a suitable partner to shake hands with. He defends Netanyahu and his government, which I believe is isolated."
He clarified: "I think the whole world now sees that we are victims, and that the Israeli government should be punished, and I don't believe there is any common ground between me and him."
Rajoub continued: "Instead of speaking on behalf of sports, or about laws, or about the rights of Palestinians, he came to defend, and even to polish the ugly face of this Israeli government."
The Palestinian official added: "How can I shake hands or take a picture with such a person? I think that is shameful for him."
Rajoub had refused a request from Gianni Infantino, President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), to take a group photo and shake hands with an official from the Israeli Football Association during the FIFA Congress, which was held yesterday, Thursday, in Vancouver, Canada.
