Infantino Announces Candidacy for New FIFA Presidential Term
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced his intention to seek re-election for a new term during the upcoming FIFA Congress next year. The Swiss official revealed his decision at the close of the 76th General Assembly, affirming his desire to continue leading the global football organization for an additional period.
"I would like to inform you that I will run in the upcoming elections," Gianni Infantino stated at the conclusion of the Assembly. This move positions him to potentially become the first president to serve four consecutive terms, including his initial partial term following Michel Platini, thereby solidifying his historical standing at the helm of the international body.
The FIFA Congress also approved the financial budget, with expectations of achieving record revenues of up to $11 billion for the current cycle. This increase is attributed to the expansion of both the Men's and Women's World Cup tournaments. Notably, the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature 48 teams for the first time, marking it as the longest and largest event in the sport's history.
The General Assembly further approved an estimated budget of $14 billion for the 2027-2030 cycle, following the unanimous approval of the financial accounts. This financial strategy is set to support development projects and new tournaments, including expanded versions of the Men's and Women's Club World Cups, as part of ongoing efforts to bolster financial resources for national associations globally.
