French club Olympique Marseille and Argentine defender Leonardo Balerdi have mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the current season. The player informed the club's management of his desire to seek a new challenge in another country and join an ambitious club after the upcoming World Cup finals. This move is part of a shared understanding between both parties to facilitate the transfer of the international defender, who aims to further develop his professional career abroad.
Olympique Marseille's strategy behind this decision is to sell Balerdi's contract two years before its official expiration in June 2028. This aims to avoid him entering the final year of his deal and potentially losing market value. In this context, sources familiar with the French club's strategy stated, "Keeping him in the squad for next season and letting him reach one year remaining on his contract would be a real strategic mistake on the club's part," which has led the management to be open to discussing offers for his imminent departure.
For his part, Leonardo Balerdi confirmed his desire to leave to Marseille officials. The Argentine defender stated, "I confirmed to Marseille's directors my wish to leave the club after the World Cup." This comes despite his significant standing within the team, having extended his contract, improved his financial terms, and been promoted to wear the captain's armband in the summer of 2024. Estimates suggest the club could receive between €25 million and €30 million from the anticipated sale, even though the management had been prepared last summer to reject offers up to €40 million to retain the player's services.
Ongoing discussions are currently taking place to determine the next destination for the defender, who has 11 international caps with the Argentine national team, amidst interest from several clubs monitoring his contractual situation.
