Olympique Marseille's New Logo Sparks Fan Outcry During Metz Clash
French club Olympique Marseille announced the launch of a new team logo on April 9, a decision that ignited a wave of angry reactions from the club's fanbase. During the Ligue 1 match against Metz, protest banners were displayed, criticizing the new visual identity. Fans linked this change to the club's recent period of technical instability.
The new logo features a different design for the traditional "M" letter; however, this update was met with widespread rejection in the stands. Olympique Marseille fans displayed banners, with one stating, "Ugly logo and unstable team, you are ruining everything." In another message reflecting the extent of their frustration with the management, protesters added, "This crest bears the face of the current season and represents clear ugliness," a clear reference to the declining results under Frank McCourt's ownership.
This announcement coincided with comprehensive administrative changes, as the logo was unveiled just one day before Stéphane Richard's appointment as the club's new president, succeeding the previous management that included Pablo Longoria and Mehdi Benatia. Richard is set to begin his duties on July 2, and he has stated that his primary mission is to establish stability and calm, in an attempt to appease fan anger regarding recent policies.
