Sevilla Sacks Garcia Pimienta, Appoints Joaquin Caparros as Head Coach
Spanish club Sevilla announced on Monday the dismissal of head coach Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta following the conclusion of Matchday 31 of La Liga, a period marked by a significant downturn in the Andalusian team's results.
Amidst a string of negative outcomes, the Andalusian management made the decision after the club suffered four consecutive defeats against Athletic Bilbao, Real Betis, Atlético Madrid, and Valencia. This left the team in 14th place with 36 points. Although Sevilla remains seven points clear of the relegation zone, officials' desire to rectify the team's trajectory expedited the appointment of Joaquín Caparrós to take over technical matters.
For his part, Garcia Pimienta reviewed his time with the team before his departure, asserting that the club had been close to continental competition in previous periods. Pimienta stated, "We were level on points with the Europa Conference League qualification spots and just one point away from the Europa League." However, fluctuating overall performance and an exit from the Copa del Rey against Almeria contributed to the complicated situation for the coaching staff, who could not withstand the pressure of the phase.
This step is part of the technical instability that Sevilla has been experiencing, as no coach has managed to complete a full season since Julen Lopetegui's era. Last season, the club had three different technical directors: José Luis Mendilibar, Diego Alonso, and Quique Sánchez Flores, highlighting the significant challenges facing sporting stability within the club.
