Sevilla Coach Before Barcelona Clash: 'Today There Are Wars and We Talk About Playing a Match... It Has Become Inhuman'
Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda emphasized that football is not merely a game, but a tool that can offer hope and alleviate people's suffering, particularly amidst the ongoing wars worldwide.
During the press conference preceding his team's match against Barcelona, Almeyda stated: "Football has something very beautiful that stirs emotions. If used correctly, football is a cure for many people, and it is for us too."
He continued: "Today there are wars and we are talking about playing a match. This means we don't care about anything. And this is the sad part, that work must continue. There is a war, and I'm breaking my head to go play (at Camp Nou) and end this 23-year drought. We have moved from something beautiful to something almost inhumane."
He further elaborated: "If every missile launched costs 50 million, but in Africa there is hunger. Why instead of launching those missiles don't we take 50 million for rice or education? We live in a self-centered world, and what I try to do in football is to enjoy this human aspect."
Almeyda concluded: "We invite people to training, and we appreciate when they stop to ask for a photo, and that should be valued. The world is declining in all respects, and we are all part of that. I have prolonged this from an emotional perspective, I apologize."
