Congo President Intervenes, Assumes Responsibility for Players' Delayed Return After World Cup Qualification Celebrations
Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has responded to complaints from European clubs regarding the delayed return of some players to their teams. The delays were attributed to the "Leopards'" historic celebrations following their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
The DR Congo national team's return to the World Cup finals after 52 years was an unprecedented historical event, transforming the end of the international break into widespread national celebrations. Players extended their stay in the country beyond the period allowed by their clubs, fueled by the public's euphoria over this long-awaited qualification, which had not been achieved since 1974. However, this delay did not come without consequences, quickly leading to financial penalties and creating sporting tensions with European clubs.
In response to this situation, President Tshisekedi decided to take full responsibility for the repercussions of these popular celebrations. In a direct message to the players, the Congolese President affirmed his full support, stating, "The fines should be directed to the Congolese Football Federation." He emphasized that "the state will cover these payments so as not to affect the players' careers or place any additional pressure on them."
Several clubs had expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation. Lille, for instance, filed a complaint regarding the absence of their player Chancel Mbemba, arguing that his extended stay with the national team affected his commitments to the club.
West Ham United also joined the list of affected clubs, submitting a complaint to FIFA regarding the absence of their player Aaron Wan-Bissaka, under the same circumstances related to the celebrations and the players' extended stay beyond the period agreed upon with their clubs.
