Champions League in Talks with Nike to Replace Adidas as Official Ball Sponsor
The UEFA Champions League is currently negotiating a potential change in the official match ball sponsorship contract, with discussions moving towards a shift from long-standing partner Adidas to Nike. UC3, a joint venture between UEFA and clubs, confirmed these ongoing discussions in a statement released on Thursday, indicating a desire to refresh the commercial identity of the continent's premier club competition.
Should these negotiations be successful, the new agreement is expected to come into effect in 2027 and run for four seasons until 2031, thus concluding a partnership that has lasted over two decades with the current supplier. According to the Financial Times, citing a person familiar with the matter, Nike's proposed financial offer is €40 million, a figure that reflects the escalating commercial value of continental competitions in recent years.
This development brings to mind similar decisions recently seen in the sports arena, where the German Football Association (DFB) previously chose to end its association with Adidas in favour of the American giant. This move also aligns with trends observed in Spain's La Liga, which changed its official ball sponsor in 2019 after a 23-year collaboration, as major leagues seek to boost their financial revenues and develop strategic partnerships to suit market changes.
