Real Madrid TV Attacks Refereeing, Calls Barcelona Player's Red Card Reversal a 'Scandal'
Real Madrid's official television channel has condemned what it described as a "refereeing scandal and unequal treatment" following a VAR decision during the La Liga match between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.
The channel strongly criticized the reversal of a red card initially shown by the referee to Barcelona player Gerard Martín, which was subsequently overturned after a VAR review.
This media offensive comes after Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Mallorca and Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid, a result that extended the gap at the top of the league table to seven points.
The criticism focused on an incident in the 50th minute of the Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona match, where VAR intervened to cancel Martín's expulsion. Real Madrid TV compared this to the red card shown to their player Fede Valverde against Atlético, where VAR did not intervene to overturn the decision, leading to his suspension and absence from the Mallorca match.
In this regard, journalists from the channel questioned: "Fede Valverde's red card was not overturned by VAR, while Gerard Martín's red card was. Why was it approved in one case and rejected in the other?" expressing their dissatisfaction with the inconsistency in refereeing standards.
The channel continued to highlight what it considered "refereeing bias" by reviewing VAR intervention statistics for the current season. Real Madrid TV stated that "Barcelona has benefited from six additional interventions, with 13 VAR decisions in their favor compared to 7 against, while Real Madrid has recorded 3 decisions in their favor and 11 against" in its comparison of the figures.
As the controversy over these decisions, which significantly impact the title race, escalates, the Technical Committee of Referees within the Spanish Football Federation has remained silent, refraining from offering any clarifications regarding the decision to overturn the red card in the recent match.
