Atletico Madrid Demands Clarification from Spanish Referees Committee Over Inconsistent Standards
Spanish club Atletico Madrid has officially requested clarification from the Technical Committee of Referees regarding what it perceives as an inconsistent application of refereeing standards during domestic competitions.
This move comes after referee Busquets Ferrer reversed a red card decision against Barcelona defender Gerard Martin following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review initiated by referee Melero Lopez. The Madrid club emphasized the necessity of a convincing justification for the varying interpretations in similar incidents.
In an official statement, the club asserted that competition becomes unfair when certain rules are explained, yet completely different standards are applied in practice. Atletico Madrid stated: "It is impossible to compete when you are explained one set of rules and another set of rules is applied," clearly indicating that these discrepancies are particularly evident when involving Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The club also criticized the VAR mechanism, describing the audio recordings as pre-directing the referee before they even view the footage on screen. The club added: "The video recordings are astonishing, as from the operations room, the referee is pre-directed before reviewing incidents, which is a perfect example of what we were told should not be done."
Atletico Madrid cited a previous incident five matchdays ago involving Valentin Barco and Ratiu, which the club believes warranted a red card that was not issued, further reinforcing their doubts about the lack of consistent standards.
In this context, coach Diego Simeone expressed understanding for the human nature of referees and their susceptibility to error. However, he simultaneously stressed that the club cannot accept a failure to adhere to predetermined standards, reflecting the general dissatisfaction within the team regarding recent decisions that the club views as impacting the course of the Spanish league competition.
