Prestiani Denies Racism Accusations Against Vinicius Jr, Admits Using Offensive Term
Benfica winger Gianluca Prestiani has denied accusations of racism leveled against him by Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr following a UEFA Champions League match between their clubs. The Argentine player asserted that the insult he uttered was homophobic, not racist, explaining that some of the terms he used are considered common insults in his home country, Argentina.
UEFA has issued a provisional suspension against Prestiani as investigations continue into the incident, which could lead to a 10-match ban if he is found guilty of using discriminatory language. Commenting on these measures, the player expressed his displeasure, stating, "Not playing the second leg hurt me a lot. I was punished for something I didn't say, and I was dealt with and punished without evidence." The Benfica winger also stressed that being accused of racism is an insult to his character, affirming that he has never committed such an act and never will.
Vinicius Jr's account was supported by his French teammate Kylian Mbappé, who reported hearing the words spoken by Prestiani during the encounter. In this context, the Argentine player defended his position by saying, "For us Argentinians, words like 'maricón' are common insults." Under current regulations, the continental federation's rules stipulate the same penalty for cases of homophobia as for racism.
Benfica coach José Mourinho faced sharp criticism for his stance, in which he appeared to blame Vinicius Jr for the incident. In a related development, Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa called on UEFA to prove that its anti-racism campaigns are not just slogans by applying deterrent penalties, while investigations are still ongoing to ascertain all the circumstances of the incident.
