Liverpool and Manchester United Interest Stalls Schlotterbeck's Contract Renewal Talks with Dortmund
Negotiations for a contract renewal between German international defender Nico Schlotterbeck and his club, Borussia Dortmund, have stalled. The player himself confirmed that he is not close to reaching a new agreement at present.
This setback comes amid reports suggesting that the 26-year-old defender has become a primary target for major Premier League clubs. This situation could force the German club to make crucial decisions regarding his future before he enters the final year of his contract.
Journalist Christian Falk indicated that Dortmund's management believes the entry of Liverpool and Manchester United into the race for the player has directly impacted the negotiation process. Falk stated: "The club made it clear that Schlotterbeck was close to finalising his agreement, but the management believes that the increased interest from Manchester United and Liverpool is the reason behind his current stance."
Schlotterbeck himself reinforced these reports with statements confirming that he is not close to renewing his contract with Dortmund anytime soon.
Borussia Dortmund's management is now considering the possibility of selling the international defender in the upcoming transfer window to avoid losing him for free, as his current contract expires in the summer of 2027.
With the player previously valued between €50 million and €60 million, Liverpool's need to strengthen their defence, potentially as a replacement for Ibrahima Konaté, becomes apparent. Meanwhile, Spanish giants Real Madrid are closely monitoring the situation, as Schlotterbeck's name has been linked with the Royal Club in recent months as part of their plans to reinforce the backline.
